Chinese Proficiency Competition Preliminary Contest

Rules and Regulations (Subject to Change)

 

       I.         Host and Organizer 

 

Organizer: Chinese Language Education and Research Center

Co-organizer: Education Office of the Consulate General of China in Los Angeles

Co-sponsor: Arizona School of Traditional Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute

 

      II.         Activity Theme

 

Chinese Theme: 天下一家

English Theme: One World, One Family

 

    III.         Competition Schedule (US Pacific Time)

 

March 15 to April 8: Online registration for all participants

April 17: Video submission deadline for all participants

April 22 (Saturday in-person) 10:00 AM: Announcement of the winners via email and on the official website (www.azconfucius.org)

 

    IV.         Participants

 

Non-Chinese nationals aged 18 to 30 who grew up abroad, whose native language and their parents' native language are not Chinese, and are currently enrolled in universities in the southwestern United States, including Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands.

Participants who have won the competition in the past cannot participate in consecutive competitions.

 

      V.         Venue

 

Arizona Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2856 E Fort Lowell, Tucson, AZ 85716. Please notice that this is a in-person competition

 

    VI.         Competition Objectives

 

Showcase participants' Chinese language proficiency, knowledge of Chinese culture, and Chinese talent through the competition

Strengthen communication among university students learning Chinese, demonstrate Chinese language proficiency, and promote improvement in Chinese language proficiency, enhance understanding of Chinese culture, and promote communication.

 

  VII.         Competition Format

 

Thematic speech: Participants deliver a prepared speech on a given topic for three minutes. They are free to develop their speech based on this year's theme, "One World, One Family." This will be held offline.

 

Knowledge quiz: Participants will answer questions on Chinese language, Chinese culture, geography, history, and other cultural knowledge from examiners, and the response time should not exceed three minutes. Sample quiz questions are attached below. This will be held offline.

 

Chinese talent: Participants will showcase their Chinese cultural talent through a 2-4 minute video submission. The content can include Chinese songs, painting, dance, martial arts, acrobatics, paper-cutting, and other cultural talents. This is an optional project and can be skipped. Please submit your video before the deadline of April 17th to info@azchwc.org.

 

The first and second parts will be held offline, while the third part is an optional project and will be submitted via video. However, only participants who complete all three parts are eligible to compete for the top three places.

 

 VIII.         Online Registration and Video Submission

 

Registration time: March 15 to April 8, late registration will not be accepted.

     IX.         Award

 

The competition is divided into two groups: the Intermediate Group for those who have studied Chinese for no more than three years, and the Advanced Group for those who have studied Chinese for more than three years.

 

• Each group will have one first prize winner, one second prize winner, and three third prize winners (tentatively).

 

• Outstanding performers in the Advanced Group will have the opportunity to participate in the 22nd "Chinese Bridge" World University Chinese Language Competition preliminaries, finals, and study in China scholarships to China in the summer of 2023. Other winners will have the opportunity to participate in summer camps in China and study in China scholarships.

• Only participants who participate in all three items are eligible to compete for the top three places in the Advanced Group competition.

 

The winning rankings of each group will be announced, and certificates and prizes will be awarded after each group competition. The prizes for the competition are wireless earphones for the first and second prize winners in both groups, and a high-quality insulated water bottle for other winners. During the competition, please do not ask staff or judges about scores or results.

 

      X.         Competition Judges

The organizer invited experts in the fields of language, culture, art, etc. to form a jury and be responsible for the evaluation of this competition.

 

     XI.         Important matters

·      Winners who have already won awards cannot participate in the competition for two consecutive years.

·      Please ensure that the recommended universities and instructors verify the eligibility and identity of each participant to keep the fairness of the competition. When necessary, the host and the organizer have the right to require the participants to issue relevant certificates.

·      The Host and Organizer reserve the right to change any content of the competition without advance notice. If there is any change or clarification, it will be announced in a timely manner.

四、参赛对象        

·      年龄 18 岁至 30 岁、非中国国籍、在国外成长、本人及其父母母语为非中文的外国在校大学生。 (美国西南地区: 亚利桑那州,新墨西哥,南加州,夏威夷和美洲太平洋群岛地区) 

·       已获奖的赴华参赛选手不可连续两届参加比赛。

·       通过比赛展示选手的中文水平、中国文化知识和中华才艺

·       加强大学生汉语学习者的交流、展现汉语水平和促进中文水平的提高,增进对中华文化的理解,促进彼此间沟通 

 

七、比赛方式

1.    命题演讲,进行自备的时长为3分钟的命题题目演讲,可根据今年的主题”天下一家”进行展开与自由发挥。 此项为线下举行。

2.    知识问答,回答考官的有关汉语知识,中国文化、地理、历史等文化知识问题,不超过3 分钟。知识问答样题附后。 此项为线下举行。

3.    中华才艺,2-4分钟,需要在4月17日之前以视频方式提交给主办方,内容包括中国歌曲、绘画、舞蹈、武术、杂技、剪纸等一系列文化 才艺。此项为可选项目,会有加分,可不参加。请于截止日4月17日前发送视频至info@azchwc.org 

♦第一和第二项为线下进行,第三项为可选项目,以视频方式提交,可不参加;但是只有三项全都参加的选手有资格角逐比赛前三名♦

九、 奖项设置

·       比赛分两组进行:中级组,学习汉语不超过三年者;高级组,学习汉语超过三年

·       每组各设一等奖1 名、二等奖1 名、三等奖3 名(暂定)

·       高级组成绩优异者有机会参加2023夏季在中国举办的第二十二届“汉语桥”世界大学生汉语大赛复赛、决赛及赴中国留学奖学金。其他获奖者有机会获得赴中国夏令营及赴中国留学奖学金。

只有三项全都参加的选手有资格角逐高级组比赛前三名 

 

各组比赛的获奖名次会分别在每组比赛结束后公布,并颁发奖状及奖品。此次比赛奖品为两个组别的一等奖和二等奖无线耳机一个,其他获奖者为高级保温水杯一个。比赛进行期间,请勿向工作人员或者评委询问分数及比赛结果。

 

十、比赛评委 

比赛将邀请语言、文化、艺术等领域的专家们组成评委会,并负责本次比赛的评审工作。 

 

十一、重要事项

1.    已获奖的赴华参赛选手不可连续两届参加比赛。 

2.    请推荐大学和指导老师务必做好每位参赛者的参赛资格及身份确认工作,以保证比赛的公正。必要时,主办、承办机构有权要求参赛者出具相关证明。

3.    主办和承办单位保留对赛事相关内容进行变更的权利,如有任何变更或补充说明,将会及时公布。

The Chinese Bridge Competition aims to provide an opportunity for students to express their Chinese proficiency, knowledge and talents while encouraging them in their pursuit of learning Chinese language and Chinese culture.

Q: Who is Qualified to attend the test?

A: The Chinese Bridge Contest is open to current college students are under the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, including Southern California, Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, and the American Pacific islands. Contestants (including direct family members) must not be Chinese native speakers. Winners who have already won awards cannot participate in the competition for two consecutive years.

HSK/HSKK Test

The ACITCM is an authorized testing center in Arizona for the Hanban Chinese Language Proficiency Exams that take place several times throughout the year. Tests are held at the CHWC campus.

The HSK (Han yu Shuiping Kaoshi) is an international standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers engaged in daily life and social activities. The HSK is required when applying to study in Chinese universities.

Introduction to Chinese Musical Instrument--Pi Pa 琵琶

Instructor: Ms. Baorong Wu

Ms. Wu has over 25 years of teaching Pipa music experience. She graduated from the most prestigious music college ---The Central Conservatory of Music in China. She studied under famous Pipa master and educator professor Lin Shi Chen. After she graduated, she accepted a faculty position at the Central Conservatory of music and taught pipa performance for 5 years, until she came to the USA.  

Instructor Wu published a Pipa instructional book titled, “Pipa Method for beginners” the book was published by one of the most influential companies in southern China. In the book, she uses new concepts to simplify the complicated pipa techniques and use modern staff notation so people from different countries will find it easier to learn. It is written in both English and Chinese and combines basic music theory and playing techniques all into one.
